Ant Macari

b. 1976, Selkirkshire, Scotland, UK

"My works are intended to be read visually as well as verbally; so the syntax and interplay between these forms of language are my main preoccupation. Importantly, the fallacy of intention (or intentional fallacy) informs every artistic decision I make, as I believe it is possible to communicate in a way that is simultaneously clear and richly poetic." Ant Macari

Biography:
Ant Macari regards drawing as a verb, an action that transforms and continues the world. His work, neither pure technical production nor creation in the romantic sense, attempts to reconcile thought with matter and time; and man with the world. His subsuming, site specific drawing praxis – which synthesizes content with context – seeks to expose the antinomies of the quotidian in order to present, what constitutes, a polysemous image/ word syntax.

Macari's practice is marked by an expanded approach to drawing which incorporates performance, installation and AV. Context/ site specific research and response is often essential to the elaboration of his ideas, which engage with their immediate situations and explore/ subvert conventions of reading and display. Religious iconography/ ideology; creation myths and New-Age mysticism have been central to the development of Macari's recent projects, which have focused on global divisions of faith and the future of art and the spiritual in this 'The Age of Aquarius'.

He has had solo exhibitions at Baltic CCA in Gateshead and NGCA in Sunderland, was selected by the New Museum in New York, for their publication /Younger Than Jesus/ Artist Directory, performed at No Soul For Sale at Tate Modern in London, and has been awarded commissions by Project Space Leeds, Locus+, Side, the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool and Leeds Art Gallery. He lives in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
